The bottom line is this: just like everything else in life that is rewarding to us, we have to be willing to take the risks and do the work, despite our insecurities, self-doubts and misgivings. What we know, though, is this: many women are re-inventing their lives.
Read MoreNot every job is going to be your passion. Not every hobby or passion is going to make you money. But I love her word, “intersection,” because it encourages us to sculpt our lives and create opportunities to intersect our passions, our hobbies and our purposes. These connections may sometimes seem grand and unattainable, but realistically even those tiny intersections matter if our desire is to keep ourselves motivated to continue the pursuit, to grow personally, and to ultimately discover and define what our own true happiness really is.

Read MoreI nipped in to the toy store to pick up “Spy Alley” an award winning board game for a 10 year old birthday party to be held that evening. I texted my husband several times to remind him of his birthday party driving duties that evening. I made snacks for the birthday party participant and monitored creative birthday card making. I drove the daughter one way, while husband took the birthday party participant another way, only to find - - yes it’s true - - the birthday party is NEXT FRIDAY.
Perfect is boring.
Read MoreMy life changed the day I realized that perfection can’t be had in the outer world. It only exists in the inner realm. Recently, I have realized that perfection is very much in my grasp all the time, even when my life and house and hair look like a tornado just blazed though it. Cause here's the deal....
Read MoreWhen did we let our lives take over our lives? Women who were mothers like me (back in the Mesozoic Era) ran ourselves ragged trying to keep up, while today’s generation of wonder women don’t even get out of bed before updating their mommy blog, checking their business portfolio and writing four pages in their journals. I wrote in my journal once.
Read MoreSexual violence—any sexual violence--is motivated by power, control, and often hostility. It keeps women in a subservient, “less-than” position in societies dominated by men. With the recent surge of calling out this archaic treatment of others, we can no longer look the other way. We will no longer keep it in the shadows.

Read MoreMaybe there are places for perfection in “things”, because I do want my car’s engine to be perfectly engineered, or my friend’s knee replacement surgery to be perfectly executed. But perfection in being human may be an impossible goal, and our pursuit of perfection can set us up for always feeling “less than” and “not enough” if we compare ourselves to others or set unrealistic expectations for ourselves.
Read MoreEvery 10 minutes, somewhere in the world, an adolescent girl dies as a result of violence. In humanitarian emergencies, gender-based violence often increases, subjecting girls to sexual and physical violence, child marriage, exploitation and trafficking. Adolescent girls in conflict zones are 90 per cent more likely to be out of school when compared to girls in conflict-free countries, compromising their future prospects for work and financial independence as adults. Read MoreThis has been a stressful week for all of us. Hurricanes, earthquakes, wildfires, insane decisions by governments (e.g. DACA). You can’t turn on the TV or your computer without some new breaking news that causes all of us internal chaos and helplessness with absolutely no ability to do anything about it (at least in the moment). It’s these times when I feel my breath start to quicken and my blood pressure rise, that I know I need to do something nice for myself.
Read MoreThis question has been on my mind this past week since visiting family in Nashville and watching my niece’s adorable 3-year-old daughter play with Barbie dolls. I have three grown children--two sons and one daughter--and I pride myself on being part of the baby boomer generation of women who considered ourselves to be equal opportunity mothers. I did my part. I gave my sons dolls and strollers to play with and my daughter a soccer ball to kick.

I should have eaten better today. I should have sent that work email before I left the office. Am I a bad mom because I send my daughter to daycare five days a week? I shouldn't have let her eat mac-n-cheese and hot dogs for dinner again. Did we let her watch her iPad too much? Ok, you get the point.”
